Interesting tip about the 410. Never used it before, I'll have to check into that. I think it's important to note to be careful not to 301 redirect everything to a home page when resolving 404 errors. Match the old content to the new, but still relevant content. Thanks

Brilliant usage of the 410 Dana! Hackers get under our skin and into our websites (). Using a 410 to cut off potential "google bombs" or other malicious linking strategies is a great idea. Thanks!

Matthew, nice was to explain why a website should not be Swiss cheese - like the metaphor and the way you explained the options. I wanted to add that a 410 code is a good way to break association with a page that has malicious/faulty anchor text, a page that has been hacked or a product or service one no longer wants to be associated with. Other than that, I agree with your stance to simply use a 301. Enjoyed!

Glenn Gabe on Twitter wrote, "I often pick up 404 page errors/issues during audits". He is absolutely correct. A 404 error check should be conducted at the onset of any SEO engagement and a plan should be setup to mitigate all of the 404s discovered. But, ongoing monitoring shouldn't be overlooked because, as I said, shit happens. Thanks Glenn for the comment.

@SMO - The primary difference between the unique landing page and a custom 404 page is the server response code. A unique landing page will respond with a 200 (OK) code where a custom 404 will likely be tied to a 404 code. So, the custom 404 is good for funneling some of the incoming link value but the search engines will still flag it as a 404 and SERP placement will drop. Whereas, the landing page will still be seen a normal page and have a good chance at retaining placement. @Reverse - If you are looking to leverage the current page's SERP placement and link value, a 301 is the best signal for that. If you are looking to "cut off all ties" between the search engines and a page and stop any linking value & anchor text attribution, a 410 would be a strong signal for that.

You said that 410 code holds more weight with the search engines when it comes to removing URLs from the index., What about the 301 as this is the most preferred redirection if you want to utilize a webpage SERP and linking value.

Unique Landing Page you can also say it as Custom 404 Page because it would be good as you can held the position of SERP for related url and you can make that page more attractive and also can put latest offers and other information which can keep the visitors for more time.

@SSM - 301 redirects are the preferred method that search engines would like to see when you are redirecting pages. A 302 is not an error response but is actually a redirect. A 302 is referred to as a temporary redirect. It is a weak signal that content has been moved/removed from a site and does not pass the same value that a 301 redirect would. 302s can cause a bit of confusion for search engines because of the 'temporary' status. The 301 (permanent redirect) is a strong signal. Not only does it pass link value but also notifies the search engines that they should be removing the old content and replacing it with the new in their index.
