Yea, it the lack of management tools that I think will keep this from really 'working'. They are looking for connections on not only social sites, but even from Google Reader. What if someone I am following there has poor judgement on a given topic? I want to be able to click "Don't show results from this person" if it shows up in a query result. Or else what? I have to go back and re-evaluate my social circle ONLY because Google is messing with my results because of certain people? It's just a little thin IMO on the management side which is a problem as far as getting ranking signals from peeps.

Dave I had been looking into similar signals using XFN & FOAF myself and the same day that G announced they were incorporating more social into our SERP`s I had earlier that day posted on Level343 about how crappy the (then) current SERP`s were with regards to picking up the connections. We all had a fairly good idea that G wants its own social and until they go beyond paying FB and twitter for their data and go the whole hog and buy one of them (never say never) we will still be left with these tweaks to SERP`s. We control the majority of our socail connections on our own properties, beyond that it is an assumed relationship, which as you suggest not the greatest signal.
