Complete monopoly in any market or field is not desirable. However, there is no competition to the big "G" and one just can't help but follow whatever they do.

Google is becoming increasingly difficult to work with in my opinion. All of these updates wit the stated aim of "improving search results" have the exact opposite effect in my opinion. Used to be you could just concentrate on writing content for your readers, these days you've got to write it for google! This wouldn't be so bad, except google hasn't got a CLUE what it wants to see and wouldn't know quality content if it shat on its chest, all it cares about is maximizing the clickthrough rate of its adverts and making you sign up for the latest google product stolen from someone else... Rather than quality content rising to the top the results swing madly from the left to right as they schizophrenical ly attempt to right the wrongs of the previous update, and of course on top of that you have bullshit personalized results shoved down your throat all the time now (which I wouldn't mind except they aren't personalized at all, they're just shit). All of which are reasons why one company having a 90% monopoly is not a good thing! (That's probably a little negative, but having had to use google to research something recently I am honestly SHOCKED at how bad their UK results are right now)

Just wait for the "manual" adjustment for Pinterest pages coming soon. Those pages are starting to show up on the first page of Google SERPs for a whole slew of keywords.
