Tony - based on this "alternative" piece your such a happy guy - remind me to make sure we go drinking together at some stage... anyway. I have to disagree with this: "Like the race to decode the genome, the race to decode the algorithm moves fiercely and quickly. Within weeks, handfuls of SEO firms and digital agencies have the entire algorithm, and begin leveraging this knowledge to client websites." Specifically the bit about client websites. Any agency that cracks that algo is gonna drop every client like a hot potato and knock a website that they own to the top spot then shut the doors and never ever talk about the discovery they make until google change the algo enough to affect them. By that time they are a superpower of some sort and dont care anymore. :-)

Great read, Tony! You obviously gave this a lot of thought. :P As alternate realities go, I don't think you're far from the mark of what could happen, the only missing element being the sudden, suspicious suicide of that top level executive. The ensuing investigation, led by a federally appointed special prosecutor, would be dubbed "The Perfect Crime" by the media. Bent on determining whether the suicide was driven by the deceased's angst for what he had helped create or if it was a contrived revenge death, his relentless pursuit of facts would entertain a bloodthirsty public for months... yada, yada... Maybe we could start a pool... he whose prediction comes closest to the eventual outcome could win a block of Google stock... or Bing... or a free SMX pass. Or maybe just a two-for-one pizza coupon. :P
