I have been trying to do this for years online in my writing and forums. It usually ends with people mad at me because I didn't just come out and give them the answer. It makes me both happy and sad at the same time.

Hi, Adrien- True, there's no shortage of people that will repeat what they've read and attribute it to "something [they] read on Rand's blog". as if by dropping his name, they're implying it has more credibility. I can't help but wonder how many times someone has reached out to him saying, "I heard you said XXX"... And I agree about it being better to be wrong with your own ideas... I get enough egg on my face that way, without looking for more opportunities. At least by actually thinking, I can can blame myself if it proves embarrassing, rather than someone else. Thanks for dropping by.

This is something I'm concerned about as well but no matter how often you might provide caveats or warnings, there will be many who simply run off thinking they've heard the truth about SEO. http://bitsandpieces.us/2011/05/09/i-can-explain-it-to-you/ I wish more would simply do their own thinking and testing. Just because some 'expert' (me included) says it's so doesn't mean it is. One of the problems that feeds this is the desire to be popular and to avoid being wrong. Lots of folks simply want to be on that band wagon, part of the popular opinion. You see this in sports where the die hard fans who have sat there through miserable seasons are suddenly joined by newbies who come out when the team is winning. And many people are just afraid of looking bad, of being wrong. Me? I'd rather be wrong with my own opinions than wrong with someone else's. Because at some point that expert will be wrong and now you have egg on your face and it wasn't even your idea. Okay, rambling rant is over. It's all too depressing.
