Anthony - you are absolutely right-on with the disposition of many businesses these days. Me? I am a great firefighter, but I have a healthy fear of fires. What this means is that the occassional fire is fine. They happen. What I cannot abide is when the fires are set by people within the organization itself. I agree with your assessment that it is necessary to slow the production line down. If no one is checking on the quality of the product, who cares if it is delivered on time? Just because a production line CAN increase its throughput doesnt mean it should. Unless throughput has nothing to do with quality. And people burn out. Smart people eventually refuse to keep being sent into fires they didnt start. I dont mean career-mongers... they'll do anything to get to the next accolade... I am talking about well-rounded people who realize work is not life. That's the secret. I am only willing to do so much in a given span of time. I am far beyond killing myself for a boss to get a promotion while my marriage and realationship with my kids suffers. Build in the constraint. All it means is that you are sane.

It seems to me that "fires" start because of a lack of a set up reputation management strategy. This is especially true for online businesses. Review management, social media analytics, and local SEO are key to keeping your business on track.
