Adding Multiple Pages: Why It Matters for SEO

adding multiple pages is ok, ok?There are hundreds of domains out there that are comprised of thousands, even millions of different pages. For many of these domains, those thousands of pages are full of spammy content, and so the domain needs to be completely re-launched (usually under new management).

For other domains, there are even more archived pages that still need to be launched. To make a long story short, there are lots of Webmasters out there that will have to (either now or someday in the future) add a large number of pages to the web.

When it comes to contemplating how to make this happen, Google is the first thing that comes to mind. How does Google want this done? In other words, what is the best way to make this happen while still being able to be indexed quickly and not get penalized because the bots think you’re uploading spam?

Adding Multiple Pages: Matt Cutts Answers In His Latest Video

This question originally came from someone who wanted to know what to do if a newspaper company wanted to add an archive with 200k pages. He asked the head of webspam Matt Cutts in the following video:

To Sum Up: His answer didn’t suggest that there was a right way or a wrong way to go about something like this. He said that Google could likely handle it either way, but if they see a lot of things ranking on a site they might have the manual webspam team take a look.

If it doesn’t matter how long it takes you to roll out all of your pages, it’s probably best to do it in steps. However, Google can handle it if you want to roll everything out at once.

SEO Considerations when Adding Multiple Pages

There are really two SEO takeaways from Cutts’ latest video: First, do not roll out thousands of pages at once if they are poor quality and you’re trying to trick Google in any way. This should go as obvious, but some think that rolling out a lot of pages will be the easiest way to get something up and running, and this just isn’t the case.

Second, if you have thousands of high quality pages you want to roll out, be prepared for a manual review. You might be slow to see SEO results, but Google will be able to handle it.
